Christie’s Launches Blockchain Ownership Certificates for Photos

Christie’s, the renowned auction house, has partnered with Kresus, a leading crypto wallet provider, to introduce blockchain-based certificates of ownership for a photography collection. This innovative approach aims to revolutionize how art collectors authenticate and manage their collections, leveraging the transparency and security of blockchain technology.

The sale will feature 130 lots, each with a digital certificate issued on the blockchain. This system offers a secure, digital record of who owns each piece. Each certificate will be minted on Base, an Ethereum layer- blockchain developed by Coinbase, ensuring a secure and permanent record of ownership.

Christie’s collaboration with Kresus will see the issuance of digital certificates for over 130 lots in the auction titled “An Eye Towards the Real: Photographs from the Collection of Ambassador Trevor Traina,” scheduled for October at Christie’s Rockefeller Center.

Blockchain technology offers a tamper-proof and unique record of ownership and provenance for artworks. By using digital certificates, collectors can authenticate and manage their physical art through their wallet, providing a reliable and secure alternative to traditional paper records.

This latest pilot program marks a significant step forward in the art world’s adoption of blockchain technology, aligning physical works with digital certificates.

According to Trevor Traina, founder of Kresus, “This partnership with Christie’s is a testament to the potential of blockchain technology in transforming the art market. It provides collectors with a modern solution to authenticate and manage their collections securely.”

As the art market continues to embrace digital innovations, Christie’s initiative could pave the way for broader adoption of blockchain technology in the industry.
